MEMORY LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

MEMORY LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
BY WAN ROHANA WAN ENDUT

What Is MEMORY ?

Memory is the ability to encode, store, retain and subsequently recall important or less important information.

To Do Well In Study, We Need The Ability To Learn Well Which Is :
· Understand Memory Process
· Have A Memory Strategy
· Understand Concentration
· Have A Strategy To Increase Concentration
· Reading / Study System

Learning Pyramid

Memory Process

Our Brain Works Like A Computer To Encoding, Storage And Retrieval Our Memory.
Encoding :

For computers, encoding data is the process of putting a sequence of characters. For example letters, numbers and punctuation will be specialized into a format form to put into a storage while for humans, encoding data is just like writing, reading or watching something and then will be saved into our memory.
Storage :

For computers, storage will be saved into an electronic devices such as hard drive and memory card. For humans, our memory will be stored into our brain.Storage is the more or less passive process of retaining information in the brain, whether in the sensory memory (SM), the short-term memory (STM) or the permanent long-term memory (LTM).

Retrieval :

For computers, retrieval is the process of accessing information from memory devices or storage devices like printer. For humans, re-accessing of events or information from the past, which have been previously encoded and stored in the brain. In common word, it is known as remembering.

Memory Strategy

1. Massed Practise VS Space Practise

  • Massed Practise - This practise is the practise we do in last minutes , really not recommended to all student because this type of practise will only went into a short term memory (STM), and you will easily forget what you have learnt.
  • Space Practise - Relax when study, study everyday for at least 10 minutes to revise what have they learnt. No rush in this study. This type of practise really recommended for student. Things we learnt will be safely saved in our long term memory.

2. ACRONYMS

Take the front letter of the things to create something easy to remember. For example :
  • Malaysia Airline System - MAS
  • University Technology Mara - UITM

3. ACROSTIC

This way is similar to acronyms but we create a sentences with the front letter. For example :
Rainbow colour (In Malay) : Merah, Jingga, Kuning, Hijau, Biru, Indigo, Ungu
So we can create acrostic such as : Michael Jackson Kick His Brother In University, take from the letter M, J, K, H, B, I, U.

3.  MNEMONIC

Its to trick our mind and make it funny so that we can easily understand and memorised the thing we studies . Normally someone willuse funny acronyms or melody .

5. ELABORATION STRATERGY (MIND MAP )

· Drawing something so we can easily visual it

· Must know how to separate the point

UNDERSTAND CONCENTRATION

What Is Concentration ?

  •   focusing our mind on what we are doing.

Causes of poor concentration :

· Lack of attention
· Lack of interest
· Lack of motivation
· Distraction from others
· Uncomfortable environment
· Physiological matters - Illness, tiredness

Physiological matters - personal problems, worries, anxieties

STRATEGY TO INCRASE CONCENTRATION

- Motivational & organizational strategy

- Positive learning environment
- Deal with internal distraction
- Use active learning strategy
- Match your learning style
- Monitor your concentration
Take short breaks
- Focus on one task at a time

HOW TO STUDY STRATERGIC WITH ( SQ3R )
