What Is Taking Notes ?
- Writing down ideas from lectures and readings in our words to make you understand.
Why Takes Notes ?
· To pay attention
· Helps us study for examination
· Helps us improve our memory
· Helps us takes ownership of ideas
· Helps us engage our senses
· Helps us organize and process data and information
· Helps the lectures test students on how will the captured given information
· Accurate record of information
· To interpret, condense and organize information
WHY REVIEW NOTES ?
· We lose 80% of what we hear if it is not reviewed within few hours.
· Identify any question for peers, the next class or ask the professor
· There is not enough time to absorb all the information given in class if it's not reviewed on a regular basis
· Think: "if i were tested on lecture tomorrow, would I ace it ? " make it so ! TAKE A LITTLE TIME EVERYDAY TO REVIEW NOTES
· Review notes you take in a timely manner, you forget most of what you read shortly after you finish reading
MATERIAL FOR TAKING NOTES :
· Pens
· Pencil
· Paper
WHAT TO DO BEFORE ENTERING CLASS
· Review the notes from the day before
· Review your reading assignments
· Make sure you have paper,text,pens and pencil
· Write the date at the top of your paper notes
· Leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later
· Read before class
· By reading the text:
1. Build up the background about the topic
2. Have idea what the lecture is about
3. Identify main ideas of the lecture and organize notes easier
4. Be familiar with the key terms relates to the topic
· Get ready to take notes as walk into the classroom
· Sitting in front of the classroom
· Find motivated friend for sit in the first rows of class
· Review the notes while waiting for class begin
EFFECTIVE NOTE TAKING
· Read before the lecture
· Review last notes
· Sit in the lecture's line of vision
· What to listen
· Focus physically and mentally
· Open mind and listen carefully
· Control emotional
· Listen for the main point and elated details and take notes
· Ask and answer questions
· Monitoring listening by checking with lecturer and classmate if unsure of same information

• Read the text assignment before the lecture to build background on the topic
• Review our last set of notes before the lecture begins
• Sit in the lecturer’s line of vision
• Decide what we want to listen
• Focus our attention physically by sitting up and making eye contact with the speaker
• Focus our attention mentally by eliminating or avoiding distractions
• Listen with an open mind, setting aside our own biased
• Control our emotional responses
• Listen for the main points and related details and take notes
• Ask and answer questions
• Monitor our listening. Check with lecturer or a classmate (at the end of the lecture) if we’re unsure of some of the information
ACRONYMS
Its to trick our mind and make it funny so that we can easily understand and memorised the thing we studies . Normally someone willuse funny acronyms or melody .
ELABORATION STRATERGY (MIND MAP)
ACRONYMS
Take the front letter of the things to create something easy to remember. For example :
- Malaysia Airline System - MAS
- University Technology Mara - UITM
ACROSTIC
This way is similar to acronyms but we create a sentences with the front letter. For example :
Rainbow colour (In Malay) : Merah, Jingga, Kuning, Hijau, Biru, Indigo, Ungu
So we can create acrostic such as : Michael Jackson Kick His Brother In University, take from the letter M, J, K, H, B, I, U
MNEMONIC
Its to trick our mind and make it funny so that we can easily understand and memorised the thing we studies . Normally someone willuse funny acronyms or melody .
· Drawing something so we can easily visual it
· Must know how to separate the point
SQ3R
· Be an aggressive,not a passive listener
- Ask questions and discuss if its hard to understand
· Watch your lecturer mood
- Key actions to note as you observe your instructor
· Be alert to repetition
- When the lecturer repeats a specific point, make note of it because it might be an important point
